In a recent development, the Supreme Court has rejected the plea of 10 out of the 11 convicts involved in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case, who sought an extension of the surrender deadline. The court, on January 8, had nullified the Gujarat government's remission, which allowed the premature release of all 11 individuals convicted for the heinous crime committed during the 2002 communal riots. The top court emphasized that the Gujarat government lacked jurisdiction over the remission of a sentence awarded in Maharashtra, accusing it of usurping power not vested in it and abusing its authority.
The rejected plea by the convicts, filed on Friday, cited various reasons such as family responsibilities, care for aged parents, harvesting of winter crops, and health conditions, requesting additional time ranging from four to six weeks. However, the Supreme Court held that these reasons did not justify an extension and that the convicts must comply with the original order to surrender within two weeks.
